Founded in 1849, the monks of New Melleray Abbey have been providing hand-crafted caskets directly to the general public for over a decade. They use local wood, much of it coming from their own award-winning 1200 acre forest. Their timberlands are managed to be a sustainable eco-system, and the monks plant a tree in honor of each child for which the casket is made. The caskets are blessed by a monk craftsman, and a mass is offered in their church in memory of your loved one, with the child's name added to their Memorial Book.
The monks view making children's caskets as a corporal work of mercy. Our infant casket is made of solid yellow pine or red oak adorned with an optional keepsake cross. It has a one-piece hinged lid complete with a fully upholstered muslin interior. The inside lid and pillow are of the same upholstery upgrade used in our premium caskets. As a living memorial, each spring we plant a tree seedling in honor of every child who is buried in one of our caskets. A special mass will be said in the child’s name. A hand-sized 3" x 4 1/2" keepsake cross is also included with each casket.
The Infant Casket measures:
Outside: 24" L x 13" W x 10.5" H
Inside : 22" L x 11" W x 8.5" H
The closed casket has a beveled raised top and a double cross design on the lid. Additionally a keepsake cross is included for you to take home. The soft bedding is cream colored cotton with a matching pillow. A latch secures the closure.
